Booster Pump Systems: How to Size One for a Building or a Plant

13 Oct 2026 · CNP Pump Global · 2 min read

A booster pump system lifts or maintains water pressure where the supply is too weak: tall buildings, factories, farms and water-treatment plants. A well-sized booster delivers steady pressure at every tap, runs quietly and uses less energy.

What a booster set contains

  • One or more vertical multistage pumps (often CDL or CDLF), usually in a duty/standby or duty/assist arrangement
  • A control panel, frequently with a variable-frequency drive (VFD) for constant pressure
  • Pressure transmitter, diaphragm tank, valves and a common manifold

Step 1: Find the peak flow

Estimate the maximum simultaneous demand, not the total connected load. For buildings this depends on the number of outlets and how likely they are to be used together. Round it up sensibly and keep the figure in m³/h.

Step 2: Calculate the head

Total head is the sum of the static lift (height to the highest outlet), the required outlet pressure (for example 2 to 3 bar at the last tap, converted to metres) and the friction losses in the pipework and fittings, minus any positive suction pressure from the mains. Our Pipeline Loss tool uses the same calculation, so the figures in your report are traceable.

Step 3: Choose the number of pumps

Two or three smaller pumps usually beat one large pump: they follow the demand curve, give you a standby, and let one pump be serviced while the system keeps running. Many projects use a duty plus standby arrangement, or a duty plus assist pump for peaks.

Step 4: Check suction and NPSH

If water is drawn from a tank or a well, confirm that the available NPSH exceeds the pump's required NPSH with a safety margin. A suction problem is the most common cause of noise and early wear.

Step 5: Decide on control

A VFD keeps pressure constant and saves energy at partial load. For simple duties a pressure switch with a tank may be enough. Tell us the voltage, frequency and whether you need remote monitoring.

Send us your project data

Flow, head, liquid, temperature, power supply and the site location are all we need to propose a booster set. Request a quotation or ask the assistant to suggest models for your duty.
