Designing for 60 Hz: How Supply Frequency Changes Your Pump Selection

07 Oct 2026 · CNP Pump Global · 2 min read

Many projects run on a 60 Hz supply, but pump performance is often quoted at 50 Hz. Speed changes with frequency, and flow, head and power change with it. A sound selection must therefore use data for the frequency actually in use.

The example duty

45 m³/h at 35 m total head, clean water, 60 Hz, running 3,000 hours a year at 0.12 USD per kWh.

What the report shows

The selection found 18 pumps and states clearly that the data is for 60 Hz. The highlights:

  • Closest match: the TD125-32/4, at 45.0 m³/h and 34.9 m.
  • Highest efficiency: the TD80-30/2, at 61.5 %.
  • Lowest energy cost: the SJ30-5, at about USD 2,755 a year.

Why we state the frequency on every report

If a 50 Hz curve is used for a 60 Hz installation, the pump may fall short of the duty or draw more power than expected. Our reports state the operating frequency in the design basis so that consultants and buyers can check it at a glance.

Checklist for 60 Hz projects

  • Confirm the supply frequency and voltage at the site.
  • Ask for performance data at that frequency.
  • Check that the motor is suitable for the supply.
